As everything in life, food and what people like change. Meat and dairy products have been replaced with organic black beans and kale, you can get protein from almond milk, or quinoa and you can find vegan butter. Nourishing yourself with a well balanced diet of locally grown, organic unprocessed foods prepared fresh daily is always the most ideal way to eat – yet, have you ever noticed when you do get to buy and enjoy these luxuries, there’s something else pulling you into the refrigerator and cupboards after meals times?
If it’s not hunger and nutrition that guide you, what is it that you’re searching for? Could it be the same thing you’re searching for that’s going to make you feel complete and satisfied? Food has taken on a larger role and is filled with debates, emotion, and loved ones. Meals and food as we see it are an illusion. Nothing is as it appears on the surface. Produce and grocery stores are lined with unknowns; pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, chemical additives, and process upon process stripping our food of it’s nutritional value. Behind each glass of milk is an agenda; a company, distribution chain, a processing plant, pulling us further and further from the farms we love.
The more we remove ourself from the source, the less we’re able to maintain balance. Processed food (diets) lack in nutrition and as a result, we require caffeine to wake up, sports and exercise to calm us down, alcohol to let go of our inhabitants, sugar to make us feel satisfied, pills to sleep through the night and drugs or surgeries to provide us with an illusion of health. Vitamins and nutrients are hard to come by and nourishment from mealtime is even more rare. Have we become a society that is artificially sustained?
Prehaps we are searching for the answers in all the wrong places. How can food ever bring happiness? If something were a true source of happiness, the more we had of it, the happier we’d become. “The experience of suffering will never be changed by the same cause, But we can see the experience of happiness will be changed by the same cause. For example, by eating will change into suffering just through eating. How? When we eat our favorite food, it tastes wonderful, but if we were to continue plateful after plateful our happiness would soon change into discomfort, disgust and eventually pain. This shows us worldly enjoyments such as eating is not real happiness and the pleasure that comes from worldly enjoyments is not real happiness.” – How to Transform Your Life, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
Prehaps the cravings that never satisfy us is actually a desire to cherish others, to give others our time and attention at mealtime. The more we eliminate processed foods from our diets, the more aware we become of nutritional supplements that lack the love, good intentions of a home cooked. The cleaner we eat, the clearer we think, and the more we can embrace our health, nutrition, and most importantly our mind. Living a cleaner lifestyle, we inspire others, empower ourself and nourish our bodies with delicious, healthy, balanced foods.
Be kind, and wish for greater love and joy for all, eat clean, and live well. <3
